Buddies are volunteers who are responsible for working 1-on-1 with their Challenger Baseball athlete, ensuring they are working towards their unique and individual goals and promoting independence. Buddies are a crucial part of any Challenger Baseball program. Some of the roles of a buddy may include:
- Being the liaison between the athlete’s parent(s) and the coach;
- Assisting with motivation and fundamental movement techniques;
- Cheering on players and encouraging and/or assisting them to set personal goals;
- Being a friend and supportive partner;
- Assisting players in learning big life skills alongside learning the fundaments of baseball; and
- Advocating for the individual differences and needs of an athlete.
Anyone who is 12 years old and above, and willing to make a significant commitment to Challenger Baseball by agreeing to show up regularly (practices once a week for a minimum of 8 weeks), and who feels capable of being a supportive mentor, friend and ally to a Challenger Baseball athlete, is welcome to sign up to become a buddy. NOTE: younger buddies may be considered if an athlete’s parent/guardian advocates for the responsibility and reliability of the potential buddy.
